Garage door cable replacement

Garage door lifting cables work with the springs to support and move the door. We replace damaged residential garage door cables in Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northern Kentucky. We also inspect the related hardware to understand why a cable frayed, broke, or came loose.

Why it happens

Lifting cables bend and carry load repeatedly as the door operates. Over time, individual wires can wear or break, particularly where corrosion or rubbing affects the cable. Water and road salt brought into the garage can contribute to rust near the lower hardware. A damaged pulley, misaligned drum, or uneven door movement can also affect cable wear and tracking. Sometimes a cable comes off its drum because tension was lost elsewhere in the system, such as after a spring failure. We check these related causes because replacing a cable alone may leave the condition that caused the problem unresolved.

What to look for

  • Frayed strands along a lifting cable
  • A broken cable beside the door
  • A cable hanging slack or loose
  • One side of the door rises first
  • A cable sitting outside its drum grooves
  • Rust or wear near cable attachment points

What to be aware of

Cables and their attachment points can be under substantial spring tension, even when the door is closed. Do not loosen bottom brackets, cut a cable, or try to put it back on a drum yourself. A cable failure can leave one side of the door unsupported and cause the door to tilt or fall. Stop using the opener if a cable is broken, loose, or visibly frayed. Keep clear of the opening if the door is raised or crooked, and do not attempt to guide it down by hand.

What can be done

We begin by inspecting both lifting cables, their attachment points, the springs, and the drums or pulleys used by the door. We look for wear, corrosion, lost tension, and alignment problems before recommending the work. We explain what needs replacement or adjustment and confirm the final out-the-door price before starting. The service involves securing the door, managing spring tension safely, and fitting cables appropriate to the door’s lifting system. We address related hardware problems included in the agreed work, then check cable routing, tension, and door balance. We test the door’s movement and opener operation after the lifting system is properly set.
